Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

You do not need to be in shape to start martial arts training. This is a place where you can get into shape, stay in shape, and push yourself to higher levels at your own pace and convenience.

Do I need to compete?

Not at all. Our classes and programs focus on technique and skill development through practice and dedication. Testing yourself through competition is at your own accord and then approved upon your coaches discretion.

What gear do I need to start?

It is always advised to bring and wear a rash guard, shorts and or typical athletic apparel, as well as having a groin cup and a mouth piece or any other item for injury prevention from contact. For our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, a standard grappling gi or kimono is required for participation. For striking classes such as boxing / kickboxing / muay thai, standard boxing gloves are required for participation. For sanitation purposes, you are required to provide your own boxing gloves and shin pads.

What if I’ve never done this?

Having an athletic background is always favorable when entering MMA and competitive combat sports.  However, our school has a developed and continually evolving curriculum that is designed to provide growth and improvement for members at any skill or athletic level, from first-time novices just starting their journey to world-class professionals competing at the highest levels.

Are the facilities clean?

It is extremely important to us at ISMMA that our facilities are clean and sanitary for our students and patrons. Our facilities are cleaned and sanitized, top to bottom daily. However, we also highly suggest preventative measures to our patrons to maximize sanitation and cleanliness among our students such as keeping sanitary products such as antibacterial or pro-biotic soaps and / or solutions and continually washing any or all gear / equipment used within the facilities.

How long do I have to train before I become good?

This is a question that has no real answer.  It depends on what your goals are, how often you train, how well you can retain information and the durability of your martial arts & athletic spirit.

I want to fight.  How do I become a fighter?

To become a fighter amongst our competitive team, any candidate must first develop, possess, and/or maintain a technical martial arts or combat sports foundation. Our coaches will assess each competitive candidate or potential member and is on an approval only basis.

What are the child age requirements?

Our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program is for kids aged from 8 – 13 years old. With the signature of a parent or legal guardian, young adults from 16 – 18 can join our MMA program upon approval of our coaches.

What does the curriculum consist of and what is the difference between the curriculum and the MMA training?

Our curriculum consists of Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, and Submission Wrestling.  The curriculum classes are great for people who are just starting out.  These classes are designed to teach you how to grapple, box, kickbox, and wrestle. Our MMA training is for our competition team and you are expected to know and perform the fundamental / core skills that are to be honed within our classes before you attempt at these competitive and intense practices.

Are there locker rooms and showers?

There are Men’s and Women’s locker rooms fully equipped with a hot/cold shower and soap as well as full sized sinks in each.
